Almost two decades ago, my voice teacher and mentor, Nelson, told me that “The thought must inspire the breath.”
I’ve come to understand it as this: Open your mouth when you know your message. Know your message by understanding your truth. Theatre does not require us to put on a front; in reality, it compels us to peel away layers and reveal ourselves.
I’ve come to learn that this applies to teaching and life, too. And I am glad I have constant reminders of this lesson everyday.
